Sports Development
Having been in existence for over 30 years, this is TACOLCY’s oldest ongoing activity, based on the powerful lessons learned in sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline and persistence required for physical skill development, and self-esteem from achieving personal bests on the field – in addition to intergenerational and father-son bonding that goes on naturally during sporting and recreational actitivites. Today, over 400 4-17-year-olds participate each year in TACOLCY’s year-round, organized team sports: football, basketball, baseball, track and field, cheerleading, other outdoor and indoor sports and educational and recreational games. Coaches double as mentors; alumni fill in for absent dads. TACOLCY’s own football team, the RAIDERS, are members of the Orange Bowl’s National Youth Football League – a source of pride for them, their families and the entire community. (The RAIDERS’ name is a TACOLCY-style acronym for Raise Ambitious Individuals Determined and Eager to Reach Success!) Eight athletes qualified and competed in the 2008 Jr. Olympics after only their first track season with TACOLCY. The program runs year round from January to December and is affiliated with: Dade Youth Basketball League; FCAA League; South Florida Age Group Track & Field; AAU; USAT&F; Liberty City Charter; Miami Pop Warner; City of Miami Parks & Recreation; and Dade County Public Schools. Our teams have won championships in football and basketball and brought home several medals in track. We need volunteers year round and all volunteers must be able to pass a level one background check. For more information on registration or to volunteer, contact Cedric Hooper at 305-751-1295 ext. 128 or chooper@tacolcy.org.
